Every winter, Atlantic storms test the grid across Galway, Mayo, Clare and the rest of the West. For a business running refrigeration, tills, heating or milking equipment, even a few hours without power can mean lost stock, lost trade and a very long day.

Solar paired with battery storage is one of the few upgrades that tackles two problems at once: it cuts what you pay for electricity, and, when the system is designed for it, it can keep essential circuits running when the grid goes down. Solar Energy Solutions is an SEAI-registered contractor whose electrical installers are Registered Electrical Contractors, with a central warehouse in Ennis, Co. Clare, supporting projects across the West.

How solar and battery backup work together

Panels generate power during the day. Instead of exporting everything, a battery stores the surplus so you can use it in the evening, overnight or during an outage. Not every battery system provides backup power, so the specification matters. Backup capability, which circuits are protected and how much capacity you need should all be decided at design stage, not after installation.

Why now

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and from then on daylight hours shrink quickly. That is exactly when heating, lighting and refrigeration loads rise, and exactly when storms become more frequent. A system booked in October has time to be surveyed, connected and commissioned before the deepest part of winter.

Who benefits most

  • Farms, keeping milking, cooling and lighting running

  • Food producers and retailers, protecting chilled and frozen stock

  • Nursing homes and care settings, where continuity of power is essential

  • Hotels, pubs and restaurants, protecting kitchens, cold rooms and payment systems

A note on grants

The SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant supports the solar PV element of a system. Solar Energy Solutions can guide you through the grant application, so you are not left navigating scheme paperwork alone. Ask about how a battery fits into your project when you request a quote.
